DOCTA KICKS OFF THE ARTHUR ASHE INSPIRED NJTL PROGRAM
The Durham-Orange Community Tennis Association (DOCTA) established a National Junior Tennis League in Chapel Hill over 20 years ago under the leadership of Andy Landes.  With the support of the current DOCTA board, community volunteers, partners and the leadership of Anna Mercer-McLean, DOCTA will be engaging the community to introduce this amazing program in Durham and Orange County to reach youth ages 5-18 who want to enjoy and learn the sport of tennis.

The Program is now named National Junior Tennis and Learning.  North Carolina recently added 18 new NJTL programs and DOCTA is excited to be one of them.  As the DOCTA NJTL Program reaches out to underserved communities to create new opportunities for learning for youth, there will be opportunities for community volunteer services for older youth and adults who want to give back and to help with the program.  Volunteers will be required to be USTA Safe Play approved.

In 1969, the National Junior Tennis League co-founded by Arthur Ashe, Charlie Pasarell and Sheridan Snyder was created as a way to gain and hold the attention of young people, with the hope of teaching them the importance of character, getting an education and becoming productive citizens.  That legacy still continues across the country.

The National Junior Tennis and Learning network features more than 250 nonprofit youth development organizations that offer free or low-cost tennis and education programming to more than 160,000 under-resourced youth each year.  NJTL is supported by the USTA Foundation, the national charitable organization of the USTA.
